We Talk Over: The Game Awards Trailers

Between Slitterhead & Stray, Kowloon Walled City is getting a lot of airtime suddenly. Such a cool real-world dystopian cyberpunk setting.

Alan Wake was as scary as a game like Resident Evil 4 or 5. Somewhat spooky action games, but not games that actually make you feel afraid.

Good to hear Jeff talk about Rumbleverse, because that does sound sort of fun, but i can't help but feel like the graphical style of that game is one of those trendchasers that blends together with every other multiplayer arena game released in the past 3 years. It's like every character consists out of large blob of skin that has been stretched into a human form and sanded heavily. The initial old-timey cartoon style of the trailer looks way better.

I just saw Jeff play a bit of it, and yeah i don't know. It seems fine, but a step down from that dodgeball game. And 'fine' doesn't always seem to cut the mustard when it comes to indie multiplayer only games. It's just not very fun to be restricted to melee moves, especially when there are a bunch of AOE attacks potentially flying at you from every angle. And as long as you keep some stamina in the tank, it seems like you can sprint away from a battle fairly easily, which i find infuriating. I don't want to chase after a dude to deliver that final hit.

Why were the Tyranids retreating in that Warhammer trailer? Since when do individual minds of the Hive show fear? And also, I know they did Orcs and Chaos last time but there are so many potentially interesting stories to tell about the Space Marines. To go with what looks to be another Forge world getting wrecked by a Tyranid infestation is just lazy. Also, also, what if you took the budget for this and the budget for Darktide and combined them to give Darktide a single player story mode instead of making another generic Space Marine story.

Retreat can equal respect as much as fear. Presumably the Warrior leading that brood had faced such opponents before and knew a 1-on-1 fight would be difficult.

Once the Warrior is dead, the Gaunts' link to the Hivemind is weakened substantially enough that it's perfectly reasonable that they would "devolve" to simple fight/flight reactions until such a time as they came into contact with another Node creature.

Like it's bad enough that Jeff B has destroyed the direction of GB but his on air persona is just getting worse and worse. He was great as the "doesn't really play games" guy on the beastcast, but now he just completely dominates everything and the negativity lacks any critical lens. I'm genuinely not sure what he brings to the table aside from making viewers shut videos off 15 minutes in. I wish I could just mute knockoff Rorie

@alanmckinnon: Once their link to the hive is broken I agree. But when the Marines first showed up the Tyranids started backing down and the warrior seemed to have to rally them, but that shouldn't be possible as he is already part of their minds. Just didn't make a ton of sense to me but maybe I'm just reading their reactions wrong.

@c_toc: I like Jeff B. I get what you're saying though, he talks a bit much but I can enjoy his perspective as someone who is not really into certain things but he always seems willing to give it a shot. And more often than not, his jokes will land. I think I get a little annoyed at Jess sometimes with the interruptions just to say some sarcastic version of "I never played this therefore I don't like it", or "I won't play or watch this thing that everyone else likes unless socially forced", that kinda drives me batty. We get it already. You like only these types of games. You only like these types of movies. Okay. Not trying to send insults, just constructive criticism I guess. I like her editing on the very online show though.

I wonder why major IPs i.e Marvel Avengers and Star wars do not allow for many games of all types of genres - The Warhammer franchise has done a fantastic job over the last 10 years.

@alanmckinnon: I mean if you are making a trailer for something as niche as a new Warhammer game then surely you are going to put a lot of effort into making sure the fiction is accurately represented, right? And something as core to that fiction as the behaviors and beliefs of the different factions would be on the top of my list of things to run by the lore master and Games Workshop to ensure I have it all down accurately.

Man what the hell is going on in Hellblade 2? This was definitely a series of “I don’t know what this trailer is trying to convey”, glad I didn’t watch the Game Awards.

I get that they probably didn’t want it to be 2+ hour video, but c’mon guys they skipped so many potentially interesting games like: SW Eclipse, Somerville, Forspoken, A Plague Tale 2 and Thirsty Suitors to name a few (a crime they skipped that last one, because that trailer had style for days).

@ephantmon: Honestly I think it's better that way. Official anime licensed games don't often turn out very good, so I would rather someone take the concept and make an original IP out of it.

Also it's worth mentioning that Parasyte didn't even come up with the idea of body morphing parasites so it's free real estate in my opinion.

I'm not a big DC girl, but the Flash is a quippy guy. He's not just aping Spider-man. If they make Batman tell a joke, that'll be a road too far.

Why isn't Captain Crunch in the new suicide squad game?

I know that they aren't the words of Jeff Gerstmann directly, but hearing him say that Sonic Frontiers has shown very well behind the scenes and is "impressive" is extremely encouraging. It would be super nice if the game looked like a Sonic game, though.

I just wanted to say that this was the *exact* way I wanted to see these trailers. I refuse to watch The farce that is this event, so my only complaint would be that next year I want even less Geoff Keighley, possibly none.

@c_toc: I cancelled my yearly sub when the thing happened and I cannot see myself renewing for another year, this is just not the same anymore...
