The Beginning of Modern Era Video Games
I mean yeah sure, before that you had Atari and that was fun and you had Nintendo arcade games, but even they, with their huge cabinets and bigger space could not compare to the ultimate Nintendo Entertainment System seller and killer-app, Super Mario Bros. Europe was addicted to computer games and the Famicom in Japan was a huge seller, unlike anything seen before, but in the US the story was different. The kids continued to enjoy video games but investors and toy stores had seen video games as a lost cause after Atari shat out a thousand shit games a year. But Nintendo gambled complete financial disaster and became that generations go-to for quality video games with the Nintendo Entertainment System and their launch title (and also pack-in game, commonly), Super Mario Bros.
I think the game benefited from having a designer take the reigns as opposed to a programmer like so many games had done before it. Miyamoto became the Paul Reubens of video games, the captain of surreal, a master of his craft. The idea of Mario in essence is just insane, a world no child questioned and Super Mario would become the worlds favorite video game character within a very short period of time. But the concept and world would not be all that impressed about Super Mario Bros. The controls were immaculate, an incredible work of programming that never ceases to amaze, even to this day. The soundtrack is one of the catchiest collections of music released period. Super Mario Bros' soundtrack does not just stand out in the video game circles, it is one of the best written collections of tracks ever made.
At the time, even the thought of being able to constantly scroll across the screen was a big event. Video games hadn't flourished into what they would become yet... and in that sense, Super Mario Bros. birthed an entire generations perception of video games. There were games before Super Mario Bros... and games after Super Mario Bros. It will forever remain one of the best games ever made.
