Overview
Niko Niko Pun ("niko niko" means "smile") is a platformer game for the PC Engine. It is intended for a younger audience, and has simplified gameplay.
The game was published by NHK, the Japanese national public broadcast organization, and is based on a children's TV show that they produce. In the show, three actors in animal suits - a bear, a penguin and a mouse - perform for their young audience. It is part of a larger block of programming named NHK Okaasan to Issho, or "NHK Watch With Mother", and this is sometimes included in the game's title. The show was later adapted to an anime in the late 80s, from which this game has based its characters and look.
The goal of the game is to collect certain types of fruit to feed the trio's dragon friend at the end of each stage. Players can collect other fruit types for additional points. Some require some platforming to collect, such as jumping off a tortoise to grab fruit too high to reach normally. The player can enter doors to listen to NPCs or play a sliding-block mini-game. The game has no health bar, just a generous timer: getting hit too frequently will stun the player temporarily instead. They can select one of the three characters at the start of each level, and each plays the same.
